Scoring "Gateway: The Next Step"

Back in the summer of 2016 I was approached by a pair of old friends from film school who were in preproduction on a feature film. I thought it would be fun to be involved in a local indie film, especially considering how small the film scene is around where I live. So just like our days back in school, we got together and started collaborating!

When spotting the film, the one thing that I kept noticing is how well it built tension - however it was almost purely psychological tension. Gateway is not at all an action film, but rather a slow psychological descent. This gave me the idea to focus on developing textures and atmosphere for the music, resulting in a mostly ambient and minimalist score. It was so much fun to write in this style! I was still able to implement characater themes and leitmotifs that pop out above the atmospheres and drones, but the main role of the rest of the music is to create a pure emotion: tension, dread, relief, sadness, etc. This is one of my favorite things about music - the ability to bring out feelings with subtlety. Less is more.

But you don't have to take my word for it! The full film is available to watch publicly on vimeo. Check it out below, then be sure to listen to the soundtrack album at the top of the post!
